Before you ignore this hear me out in a recent article kotaku mentions something interesting about Final Fantasy XV. A game we have heard very little about. The article brings up a point that other Japanese role playing game(jrpg) developers may be looking at Final Fantasy XV to see if they should reinvest time in making rpg for the consoles. I should point out that we do rpg games but not as Japanese rpg games as we use to. The reason mentioned in the piece is because they have moved on to smart phones. It understandable as you have your smart phone on you more than your console. This came up as Kotaku was asking final fantasy creator Hironobu Sakaguchi his thoughts about Final Fantasy XV. Yes fans he does think it is taking to long but he stress that Square Enix is feeling the pressure by the community not just fans to get this right. The article writer Jason Schreier also got a chance to talk to Final Fantasy Type 0 director Hajime Tabata he agrees with Sakaguchi to a degree.
“There’s probably a cultural explanation for why the Japanese market is shifting toward handheld or smartphone devices. It’s pretty unique to Japan, where everyone is transporting—they have long train rides and bus rides to work, they have time to play handheld devices, or they’re spending more time in their own rooms vs. spending more time in the living room.P
There’s this kind of trend to being more accessible. But since I was very young, I’ve played games for long hours, I spent long amounts of time in front of the TV, delving into the games. So I enjoy those types of games, and I naturally want to create those types of games for the current generation and the next generations to come.
So in terms of whether console games will be received moving forward, it’s not to say that I don’t have any concerns at all, but I believe that it’ll really depend on how Final Fantasy XV does. Because I really want more people to enjoy games in the living room, on a big screen. If Final Fantasy XV doesn’t do well, perhaps there’s not much of a future for console games. It kind of really depends on how that goes.”
Hajime Tabata also says that we might see Final Fantasy XV after Type 0 comes out highlighting what have posted earlier. What that means is we might see the game fall 2015. What do you guys think can you wait until they get right so other jrpg games can follow or do you think you have waited enough. For more check out the article for yourself.
