Okay so we have a small argument when it comes to Devilman Crybaby. Basically the reviews as one Yōhei Kurose finds that Masaaki was given the project because of his association with sub culture anime thus it would resonate more than otaku anime. What this means it became more stylized with very little substance as Kurose finds flaws with story and script. As you can imagine Yuasa had to respond. And he did.
“You’re free to say whatever opinion you like. I don’t intend to find fault with the opinions of regular people. But be that as it may, if you’re someone close to my own acquaintances, I’ll object. I have no memory of people who think they’re doing a good job being unjustifiably insulted, and there is no reason I have to be silent.”
Now while Kurose appreciated Yuasa comment he went to explain why he found it wrong as he sees Japanese anime as a way to express Japan.
[“intended those comments to demonstrate how Japan’s domestic “abundant culture” can inadvertently become overshadowed due to concerns about the “outside. ]
I don’t know how Devilman Crybaby became a war over culture but it did. If you want to see what they are talking about check out the anime now on Netflix.
As always thank you for reading.
