Mortal Kombat XI variations are a big sell since you can customize them to your hearts content. But nether realm would like to remind you of something. These variations are not tournament legal. So you can only play and watch matches of basics lay outs in tournaments .
Basically according to Nether realm they are designed for online or ranked matches. They are balanced but not designed for it. Something the crew told Game Informer.

With that said thought Injustice 2 had gear with stats boost and more people had fun with that. It wasn’t allowed in tournaments but people had more fun. So I see the variation stance might not be permanent at least for online gameplay.
