Sony has come out saying that the will not focus on quality and not quantity with there games. Basically meaningful stories and games such as God Of War 4 will get the company more in return than releasing a slew of games at once hoping to corner the market.
“The latest issue of Weekly Famitsu included an interview with Sony Interactive Entertainment Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida to celebrate the 5th anniversary of the launch of the PS4 in Japan.
During the interview, he was asked to reminisce about the PS4 generation and hinted about what’s coming next.
Interestingly, Yoshida-san sees a generational change among gamers in Japan. The generation that is now in their forties and fifties mostly focused on single-player games. Nowadays college students in their twenties enjoy titles like Call of Duty, Rainbow Six Siege, or Overwatch. He feels that the Japanese gaming market, which used to be quite different from the rest of the world, has now blended more with the global market.
Sony Interactive Entertainment also radically changed development concepts between PS3 and PS4. While the PS3 was super-high performance, supercomputer-like, technology-driven dream of a hardware engineer, PS4 focused on ease of use and ease of development from the very beginning
Asked what are the goals set for Sony’s Worldwide Studios, Yoshida-san mentioned that compared to the PS3 era Sony opted to make fewer games but to increase the scale and quality of each title. He is particularly pleased by the results of Horizon Zero Dawn, Detroit: Become Human, and Marvel’s Spider-Man, which even sold well in Japan and were praised even more than expected.
It appears that Sony managed to change the previous situation which saw them having issues getting first-party games from western studios noticed in Japan even if they were good.
Lastly, he mentions that everything announced by Sony’s Japan Studio in the past two years has been released, with the exception of Everybody’s Gold VR. Nothing else has been announced after that, yet, while looking at the current market flow, and setting the aim high, Yoshida-san would like to release games which showcase the creativity unique to Japanese studios. ”
This sounds like they are looking for experiences that unique to what they have had before. Now while the argument can be made for this meaning brand new games I would like to say it can also be said for old titles deserve a second chance. Such as the JRPG genre.
If you know me or have been hear long then you know I have mentioned it before but it is okay to return to those classic games titles and bring them back. We have seen people get excited for Final Fantasy VII Remake, Shenmue 3 a new Wild Arms. A new Wild Arms is hinted at and fans want it. The demand is also for Shadow Hearts.
You can’t see it as fans he voiced it but with Universal Entertainment not interested the only real measure of fans response is the interview with Machida and Game Informer replay of Covenant. But I assure there is an audience for it that much like other titles are itching to get a new installment. If not they want to see what Machida has in store with his spiritual successor something that would be great if Studio Japan helped him and Wildrose on. I know it is a little nutty but Game Informer thought the same thing as I got that in a response when I mentioned it in the video. You can see that reaction video below.
But I will be honest that while that is my biggest wish I hope the genre returns as a whole. Legend of Legaia, Skies Of Arcadia and Legend OF Dragoon would be excellent points. If you want the battle system of FFXV combat system those games would do nicely. I mean Legaia is an rpg with fighting game inputs so making it an action RPG would only be logical. Dragoon can be the same since the only magic is in dragoon form with attack items as normal magic.
So in short I am one of those that think Sony might want to look at old titles before just saying bring us old IP. With fans who will pay it will be profitable but that is my take on this. What is yours? Let me know and you can check out the forum where this is from in the link below.
As always thank you for reading.
