In this Shadow Hearts post we will be talking about Awakers. The Awakers are one of the strongest abilities out there. But what are they? Awakers were introduced in Shadow Hearts From The New World. In the game siblings Johnny and Grace Garland are revived using the Émigré manuscript. They are revived with body that seem cybernetic or a mix of man and machine in some way.
Now to be far Johnny body does grow since the scene but as I said before it seem that they appear to be a mixture of man and machine. Meaning the look and how robotic nature Awakers are is unknown. Also the appearance is only due to the mechanical components that make up this new character type. But with Johnny have machine themed spells in this form it seems that is the idea the developers wanted to get across. So this all may just be skin deep. Also since the Garlands are the only ones we don’t know if this look is universal or just to there family line.
As far as power go Awakers can wield Malice and Will. Both are powerful magical forces in Shadow Hearts with Malice being a power that can be harmful as well cause transformations. We only see Will used to keep a person soul in checked so other properties are unclear. We also see Awaker wielding high levels of magic. From Grace Hex spells to Johnny using both Malice and Ether. Ether is used by Johnny in Ether Purge his strongest spell.
With the Garlands being the only Awakers we are left with a lot of questions. It the Machine like look for all or just them. Can they only wield Malice and Will or are there other magic forces they can channel? We don’t know but one thing that needs to be taken into account is one of the biggest question is are they the true result of resurrections from the Émigré manuscript.
Émigré manuscript has been involved in Shadow Hearts since it was introduced with Kodelka. The book has been sought to bring gods to this world or resurrection. The resurrection never went well as according to Roger no one ever had the formula right. Something that would be hard to do since Roger made sure the translations were wrong to begin with so people would cast spells that would destroy the world. But with said the Garlands are for the first time a successful resurrection. But what isn’t clear is if this is the only outcome.
Now by that I mean if people who are resurrected by the Émigré are done so to be reborn as only Awakers. This question is mainly because we have so little to go on. Awakers is form that is introduced in From The New World which has been said by Machida to be a spin off. But if this is the only true resurrections that can come from the Émigré then we have to take into cannon what this means for the series in general. I say that as sine this is a spin off in some ways fans discount it. But if it is part of the universe as a side story and not main series this should count. But what does mean?
One is that people who are brought back to life will be or are Awakers. I am saying are as you wouldn’t know if there are more people who are Awakers or would become them. What I mean by that is what happened to Johnny. Johnny didn’t know about this transformation until Killer killed him causing to manifest. Before that Johnny just was normal. The only thing that gave it away that there was something was his knife had a malice blade(though I do which that got some more time to do something more with him.) This means we could have gad a story where one Awaker could have gone around and waking people up and leaving us to deal with them. But that story is for another post.
