Guilty Gear 2020 is ramping out as we get more trailer that show off more of the game each time. The latest trailer showed off Axl showing his time traveling getting under control as he opened walking calmly out of a portal instead of him falling through time.
This got me thinking about whether we will would story elements that have been mentioned so far appear as game mechanics. But as we say in the trailer that is not the case as it didn’t show any time related gameplay. So the question is do we still have a line between story elements and character gameplay.
To be clear this line is new as for the most part through out GG history characters have been showing off there skills from story mode of XX days to gold and ex modes. But in those days it was basically showing there skills or knowledge as Sol was the only with a big changing power with dragon install which he used when he took fights seriously. You can argue dizzy control necro is an example of another character but that was always part of her gameplay.
Now after Xrd series we have characters with new abilities and they could expand on the characters. So far we have only Ky and Axl as they are ones whose story abilities have not been implemented. But that can change if we get ex modes in this game. I see it changing as we can have ex modes be the place to go nuts. I have argued this before that Guilty Gear should treat ex mode similar to how Blazblue treats ultimate mode having character at there omega level. We can do that here.
Yes so far we only have a few character who stories have given them the anime boost but with us starting a new saga you can expand on others. Lets say with May you can have her showing more Ki infused attack giving her a link the issue with Japan that was left behind from Xrd story line. If we get Anji we can mix in magic spells (which he knows as we saw it with him and Baiken in ggxx) with his gameplay through one button. Johnny can get some card tricks and it goes on.
Now this is if we only have ex as we could have more as people are thinking that wit the Daisuke talks about the game that we get back the ex and gold modes. I for one would like that as well as that is one of the things I like about the guilty gear series and I wish more games did. Let be honest as the story is trying to be a fighting anime in a fighting game why not. Now will we see it?
At the moment it seems no as both Ky and Axl don’t seem to show the buffs they got form the story in gameplay. Granted we only have seen a little bit of them in action. To prove we still haven’t seen the other overdrive move or what Sol dragon install will look like in this game. So we will have to see I hope though we do get this.
