As I was thinking about SNK story lines I began to think about The King of Fighters Maximum Impact and how whether or not it should be considered cannon? Now in order to answer that we need to understand what KOFMI is. Maximum Impact was a small series of 3 games into the 3d realm. Unlike KOF XIV this was full 3d so you can actually run circle around your opponent to avoid fireballs and other attacks of that nature.
The series would take place in South Town with Geese long since gone but before Mark Of the Wolves As Kain is not present. With Geese gone we have a new group encharge in Mephistopheles who were part of a bigger orginzation called Addes. This gave bosses in Duke and Jivatma. Duke was in control of Memphistopheles while Jivatma fought for Addes in KOF MI2 and Regulation A. MI2 added more characters and moves while Regulation A added Ash and Dulon sister Xiao Lon.
The game didn’t do to well and many fans took issue with the characters who drawn by Falcoon who also came up with Ash. There fore many fans don’t talk about even though it is one of the 2d fighting company rare outings into the 3d landscape. They even renamed maximum impact 2 to KOF 2006 to help sell it.
But if it didn’t do so well why would apply it to the time line? After all when games don’t do well it is best to treat them like they didn’t exist. Well while the game didn’t do well it also opened up some nice additions to cannon. One such is that we are looking at South Town before Mark Of The Wolves but after Fatal Fury Real Bout 1 which had Geese dying. Thus we see South Town as people are trying to bid for power.
Billy is proof of this as Rock is trying to figure out who he is Geese right hand man is trying to bring son in to take his seat. At least something as we see Billy trying to find out what he should do. This leads to a fight with Rock and him being lectured by Terry. This is of course he fails to convince Rock to join him.
Besides that we see Duke. Duke is important as he lost 2 Geese but came back to clam South Town as his. If that sounds familiar that is because that is what Kain did but Kain did it to wipe Geese memory away Duke is doing it as he wants the power. But with both mean we see people who were kept at bay by Geese. But both can’t deny him as his nightmare still hold control of this city. Thus we get Night mare Geese.
But this game served as more than that as it also served as bridge between KOF and FF. We know this as in KOF another day the anime has Iori without his flames. This is due to the events of KOF XI where Ash took them. Both Kyo and Iori are chasing after him. Now this is one of the problems
The one issue here is that it isn’t reflected in the game as Iori has his flames. But that isn’t the only problem as Geese is death complicates how SNK would go about merging the 2 time lines. Remember we know he is alive before he came in XIV as he brought together the outlaw team to look into kof in 2003
Now while that may stop them from using the game story line that will not stop them from using characters. For instance we can use Nion. Why would we use the goth girl who uses black magic? Just to mess with Rock as she has the hots for him and it would be interesting. Plus we also have Lilly Kahn who fans might want see more of. (She is also the reason why many are asking why do we have a gender altered Billy in all stars instead?) But this can go for the Meri brothers as well.
But as to whether SNK will do that we will have to see. I say that as we see Lilly pop up in the back ground during KOF XIII clock tower stage. Meaning we can still see these character outside of this game. But those are my thoughts let me know what you think below.
