These days Hollywood is looking for material. In recent days we have them us videogames as the next source material. The Witcher success has lead many other to talk about other videogames titles.
The conversation is looking at other games such as Bioshock and Dishonored. Both are games with a rich world and characters to explore. But if the Witcher has opened the door to games becoming tv series then this can lend itself to many other titles hitting your small screens and not just the big one.
While this may lend you to think of Resident Evil with its expanding universe so you can tell your own story this can be applied to a multitude of games. FEAR is one way to look at while other ways may be looking at title such as Skies Of Arcadia, Legend Of Dragoon, Shadow Hearts or Final Fantasy. I added the first set as we can use this to get the fan based hyped for a new game in the series with there beloved franchise getting adapted. But with that comes fears from the very fans showrunner are trying to get.
This fear or concern comes from fans who love the franchise and have reservations about tensile town bringing there beloved series to life only to ruin it. This fear can be seen in immediate as people look at Final Fantasy Spirits with in or down the middle as while the series does well in money wise fans of the games hate it. This can be said to some of the Resident Evil movies. Luckily there is a way to avoid this.
It all breaks down to understanding mostly. When adapting videogames we must look and understand the character and world to make sure we are telling a story new fans would love but also telling the stories the fans base that have been pushing for and supporting the series will back as well. This is why the Witcher works well as it brings to life the story the fans have been enjoying so long in the books but also keeps it interesting for fans who have been longing for this type of entertainment.
Understanding is something you will also need to translate the material so the adaption can work. You might have noticed I didn’t mention fighting games even though I cover them extensively. I love them and the stories they tell from SNK KOF and Fatal Fury to Capcom Street Fighter, Tekken or Guilty Gear. The issue I have with them is that the characters are almost impossible to bring to life. In martial movies it is hard to find someone who can sell the fight scene as well as bring the character to life. The best example is the King Of Fighters movie where they tried to bring Rugal to life.
As you see we have 2 distinct different looks. That is because Rugal is a 6 foot martial artist with insane agility and b the movie went in the wrong direction for the character. An understand of the helped in some ways such as how they can bring the character to life and what they can get away with changing. But it would still be a tall order. So when looking at what will be coming to your tv screens they need to make sure they understand the material and make sure they are adapting it for the proper medium. Other wise you will wind up with something like the live action avatar the last air bender which no one liked.
Here is hoping the live action adaption of videogames goes better.
