Today Sony has posted a stream on the PlayStation 5. This stream has been met with a divided reaction. I will like to go over it and talk about it. Talk about it as fans really are left going wwwwhhhhaaatt. That is because this was for the GDC and developers not consumers.
For consumers we want simple terms of what the system can do. What we got was that but much deeper. That is because this was really for developers. Sony had this ready for what many believe was the GDC (game developers conference) and since that was canceled we got this. Now I will say we would have gotten this at some point as most stuff from the GDC is posted online at one point or another but many fans want to know more about the system Sony is preparing for.
Consumers wanted details to confirm rumor or shoot them down. Such as the price being 500 and up or lower depending on which rumor you are thinking off. What the controller functions will be? How many versions will there be? And one of the biggest questions is will it play legacy title. Basically will the PS5 be full compatible with other systems besides the PS4? We got a little bit of that answer but not fully.
The answer we got was on the PS5 playing Ps4 games and the not all of them will play on the system. Which ones we will have to see as they will have to go game by game to give that answer. This confirms a rumor that stated that not all last gem games will be playable on the console. To some that answer the question saying that it will only go to PS4 but we were not given an answer. They never touched on it during the presentation leaving only mentions of past systems as comparing to performance and how PS5 looks to improve on it. Thus since they didn’t touch on the subject we cannot say if PS5 will play these games but Max of Yo Videogames mentioned that given the hardware the PS5 is using it should be able to handle emulation of past consoles. Basically he said it would be too difficult as you can see in the video below.
But this is why fans are torn. Not only did we not get the answer but it seems Mark was perfectly avoiding the subjects. Now this can be because it is geared for developers and as such price for the final product to players wouldn’t be mentioned. Keep in mind developer work on the console so what they can do and what tools Sony is giving them to make these games is something they would want to know. Loading an area in quick succession so gameplay is smooth is something we all want. Bu the tech to make that happen is something that is more geared to the people making games more than gamers playing them.
This leads to the other side of this conversation. Which is that Sony is saving that information to another time. Sony has been talking about doing there own event as they were planned to skip out on E3 2020 this year. Thus it is a good chance that the information many gamers where hoping to get clarity on. Is planned to be said later on. Thus we got some info here but not all of it.
What this means for anyone who was watching looking for definitive answers didn’t get them. We did get some cool out of this as info on the tech such as how it will be able to do this is cool to know for anyone who is into the technically aspect of this. Even more so that people who don’t understand things right now will get a better picture when that gets into our hands. At that moment we can look back at this presentation with Mark and go or so this is what he meant as we have actual example to go along with description.
The issue comes with this being one of the few times we get info on the PlayStation 5 and many not just developers tune in with different set of expectations. We don’t want flashy trailers or anything of the sort. What we wanted was information on the console to put these swirling rumors to rest. That didn’t happen as we got a closer more in-depth understanding as to what is under the hood for the PS5. A nice sight given how they describing what this tech will offer to developers who used makes games on it. But as consumers we just wanted so speculation to addressed and we didn’t get that. It is cool that we shouldn’t have to wait that long for a game development as that was a fear people were having as the development time seem to get longer as consoles got more power. But that wasn’t the only question people were asking.
Now that is not the only thing people are complaining about as the numbers aren’t adding up right now but with some of the data being withheld and people were set on hearing about it I saw this as a major reason. But what do you think? Let me know.
