PLayStation 5 Backward Compatibility Is Still Unknown

Yesterday Sony deep dive into PlayStation 5 showed off how the PS5 will handle playing PS4 games. Since that was all that was mentioned many believe that is all the system will do. After all it is a big feature so why not bring it up when you know so many people are watching. The thing is that is something on our mind not developers.

This speech was more geared to developers as many see it as Sony original speech for the GDC(game developers conference). A talk to developers as to what the PS5 can offer in terms of tools they can use to make the next gen of games on the console.

As for the PS4 it was used as a reference to compare and contrast performance. It was also brought as to answer how the PS5 would handle games. This is due to the fact that Sony wants a easy transition between consoles. With us still having game being made for the PS4. IN order to make the choice easier for gamers to transfer between systems we need to see how that will work.

The question as to whether or not the system will be able to play past games going further back than PS4 is a question for you or me. A question as to whether I can play my old game as a fan who loves it so. That isn’t on the mind of a developer.

A developer looking forward will not care as to what the system will do for games of past consoles. This point highlights the one thing if you listened carefully you might have noticed. For the most part this was untouched. One of the points Mark seem to not mention.

To me the stream yesterday was highlighting what Mark had already covered. Putting it in terms or examples developers can get hyped for. To prove it to you most developers are coming out to defending PS5 but that is for another post.

So to be clear this picture is not proven yet. We don’t know whether PS5 compatibility will stop at the PS4 because Sony has mentioned PS4. The hardware the PlayStation 5 uses can emulate the tech needed to run it is what started this whole rumor as that is what the patent was talking about. Something that should keep price down and something we see most emulators do online.

Most people who play old school games Shadow Hearts series, Legend Of Dragoon, Skies Of Arcadia do so on emulators. Something people can see the PS5 doing. But what keeps this above the normal emulators you download online is that this will render the game in high hd. Basically making the game to a hd remaster.

Now why have we not heard of it at this event? Many see this as a selling point Sony will probably unveil at another time when they show of the system. Basically show it off to wow gamers into getting hyped for it. But when we can look forward to that remains unknown as Sony was talking about doing there own event but given how things are right now we don’t know how things will go moving forward.  When that information comes forward I will let you know. Until then.
