Pokémon Mewtwo Strikes Back was first film for the franchise and it was a big hit but it seems they had big plans for it. One plan was to use it to kill off Ash. This is coming from the writer who wanted this to be Ash big and last adventure.

The adventures he had with his amazing Pokemon, the friendship, the coexistence. Maybe Ash wasn’t able to experience these things later in life.
