PlayStation 5 is going to have a big event next week and as we look forward to it we are getting hints that the system will be a little on the expensive side. This isn’t coming from rumors this so much as it is coming from Jim Ryan. Jim Ryan gives off the impression it will be expensive but worth it.
“I think the best way that we can address this is by providing the best possible value proposition that we can.I don’t necessarily mean lowest price. Value is a combination of many things. In our area it means games, it means number of games, depth of games, breadth of games, quality of games, price of games… all of these things and how they avail themselves of the feature set of the platform.” Jim Ryan
But it doesn’t stop there. Given how the pandemic effect was to cause the world to lockdown Sony is looking at themselves as one of the biggest sources of entertainment and they need to be ready.
“Recent history has told us that gaming is one of the pastimes, and one of the businesses, that benefits in economically difficult time. It’s quite logical, people don’t have the money to go out so they stay at home. Now, who knows how this recession is going to look, how deep it will be and how long it will last. It could be that the historic templates, the historic models, that have applied in the past may not apply in the future.” Jim Ryan
Now if you are having flash back when Jim was talking about value for the PS5 that is because it sounds similar to how the arguments for PS3 went. PS3 first gens coast a lot but offered full backwards compatibility as well as playing other mediums such as DVD’s and music. Thus the argument of you are paying for a home entertainment system more than a console made some sense. But didn’t tear away from the fact it was still a pricy entertainment system. A memory fans were afraid will come back.
But will the price scare away fans? We don’t know all of what the PS5 is capable of so asking if the system is worth a high price point is something we will have to see when we learn all of the system functions and what games it will be getting. When that happens I will let you know.
