Mortal Kombat XI has changed many things. One thing is a brother connection that some might have noticed but the old school fans know all to wheel. At one point in the series history Raiden and Shao Kahn were brothers. This was referenced in the 2nd MK movie but not really brought anywhere else. Why this was changed is not certain but they are brothers no more in the new time line.
