Mortal Kombat XI Ed Boon On Guest Characters And IP Holders

Mortal Kombat XI has a lot of guest characters. In order to get those characters it took a lot of work behind the scenes. But was it hard to get these characters to appear or where the people who own them eager? Ed Boon says it works well overall.

“What led you to include Rambo in Mortal Kombat 11? “

“We’ve had guest characters, like Freddy Krueger, since Mortal Kombat 9. Then we started doing horror and action characters like Alien and Predator. With Mortal Kombat 11, we started doing the more action hero thing like with Terminator and RoboCop. We thought Rambo would be a nice way to bookend that thing we had going with RoboCop and Terminator.

It’s different than a normal Mortal Kombat character because we’re using somebody else’s character and it needs their approval. Luckily, they’ve been very cooperative and more like a partner rather than a license holder. It’s been a very good process, but like I said, there’s a lot of approval that has to happen. We’re happy with how things turned out.You get to see who would win in a fight: Terminator or Rambo. Those were always fun things to debate when we were kids. Now we’re able to make it real.” Ed Boon
