It is coming back. With the return of the digimon with Digimon Adventure Reboot it was only matter of time before we would see the digivice return as well. Predating the show this was meant to be your digital pet that you would take care of by checking on it. This would include feeding and playing with the digimon for a certain time.
The cases are not more traverse in not only bring you the digidestined Digimon but also having light up cases. You may also get new partners as well. That is all mentioned in the article but if more information comes up I will let you know.
