Sakurai Concerned that Sephiroth Would be to Unbalance for Super Smash Bros Ultimate

Super Smash brothers started out as a Nintendo only fighter. Over the year sit grew to include characters from numerous genres and series. The fact that they were owned by Nintendo or played as them would come later. One of the series was Final Fantasy which fans were happy to see Cloud come in to the game. But he was not the only FF character as we would see Sephiroth the big bad of FF7 join him. A character that Masahiro Sakurai seemed unsure about.

“According to Source Gaming translator Kody Nokolo, Sakurai reportedly wrote about his apprehension regarding how his team had to craft Cloud’s mortal enemy in a way without breaking the game, which would probably be easy to do for a guy whose sword is canonically up to 8 feet in length.

At the same time, however, he also wanted to ensure Sephiroth would make a strong impression as one of the most iconic antagonists in video games.

Seeing as the developers had already released ARMS’ Min Min only months before in Smash Ultimate with a similar focus on long range, Sakurai ended up believing the One-Winged Angel would probably end up fine balance-wise with some of the restrictions placed upon his moveset.”
