Ninja Kamui Ep 12 aired last night and I would like to talk about it. This reaction will have spoilers. If you don’t want to be spoiled then stop now and go check out the episode over at HBO Max. AGAIN SPOILERS AHEAD.
As Dilly takes Yamaji we asked about the ninja purpose as the final battle draws near. Lets start with the question what should the ninja do beyond the code? What is there life? We knew they were killing people for Japan but we didn’t get anymore detail than that. The Chieftan reveal explains all.
The man reveal to be the Chieftan gives an explanation to the doc who didn’t have one before. We knew he had some tie to it the ninja. That would be fine but in this world it means he had to be one in some way. Who knew it was the big guy himself. But this revelation comes with reveal as to how the ninja got here. It came down to 2 things. A man who believe Higan and Mari were a way for the ninja to live on beyond killing versus Yamaji who wants to make the world only fit for the ninja.
The conversation was great as it explained how the command fell to Yamaji outside of the flash back from Emma. She filled in some blanks as to how things turned out but there were still some questions that this conversation answered. That being said it was odd one too. It feels like in some ways Chieftan yield things to Yamaji since he didn’t really put up a fight yet here we see him helping Higan in opposition to it. You could say he didn’t think he could win so he did the Star Wars mem of Obe one letting Vader kill him to help Luke but it still feels a bit odd in way to not fight him at all. Why to chose fight now?
That isn’t the only thing I am a having issue with. According to the chieftan he has no ninja abilities after his resurrection. Yet we see him cast illusions and changing appearances. I know I harp on the secret techniques but I do so to get an understanding. I get he is basically saying he is no match for Yamaji but putting it that way always seemed odd to me. He could have just said I don’t have the strength instead of no ninja powers to take him on. If that is the cause then I would like you to explain how are you controlling the visions? Powerless yet having some power it seems. Please do explain.
But this request from Higan old mentor came as Dilly was fighting for her life against Yamaji. The battel against Yamaji was interesting as we see both Dilly and Yamaji suit up pretty quickly. Ninja speed makes sense but still. The fight was expected given Dilly was last 2nd in command there showing she picked her side. With Zhan gone she was the last take on Yamaji. That trained solider versus the new ninja master.
Suit or not you saw where this was going. Yamaji just out right overpowering Dilly. The act was short and swift. So quick I wish we got to more time to explore outside of her role as Jospeh body guard. But her being the soldier turned ninja. It made sense for her to be stoic until action was require. Still it was nice to see why she chose the client versus the boss in this case. A dream worth fighting for. A dream that collided with Yamaji vision. A collision that went poorly for her.
The episode theme was purpose. This wasn’t just with the ninjas but with the FBI. Mike trying one last time to beat some sense into his old partner. Beating is the key word. I have to admit I found this funny as for all the talk and procedures and strategy this came down to 2 men brawling to see who is right. It fits the anime but I wasn’t expecting it from the FBI side. Much less to be so into it. I mean I was impressed we saw a slam out of an arm bare. Also when they were done I was laughing again as I looked at my tv saying no one could find ice packs for these 2 or what? It was just funny too me.
But the fight aside Mike was trying to get the FBI to fulfil its purpose. Go after the evil and corrupt who re across state lines. To serve and protect. As the story has done we have seen these in 2 forms. The ninjas trying to figure what there purpose should be with all the syndicates destroyed compared to the law enforcement who knows what they should do but choose not to do it A reason to move forward. One that Yamaji gave Higan long ago that has only grown. Not for the code but for all as no one can say it will not affect them. A cool episode indeed.
